campus busThe Mass Transportation Authority has expanded the Downtown/Campus Route #14 to run over 12 hours a day, 10 a.m. to 10:15 p.m. Monday through Thursday. There is no Friday service.

What began as a dream became a reality for the University of Michigan-Flint when 300 students moved into the first residence hall on the Flint campus on August 24.

On hand to mark the historic day and help the incoming freshmen unpack their vehicles was UM-Flint’s new chancellor, Dr. Ruth J. Person.  Her appointment to the position was effective August 18.

The School of Management (SOM) at the University of Michigan-Flint will soon offer a unique service to an important segment of the state’s business community.       Family-owned businesses are often referred to as the “backbone of the American economy.”  While there is wide array of services and learning opportunities available for business, very little is aimed at the important family-owned segment.

University of Michigan-Flint will receive a federal grant of $354,050 to encourage more students from disadvantaged backgrounds to enter and complete health professions training programs.  The announcement of the grant was made by Congressman Dale E. Kildee (D-MI).

Person visited the new residence hall as part of her first tour of campus. The facilty will open August 24.  As of last week, the Office of Housing and Residence Life announced that all 310 beds in the First Street Residence Hall have been assigned, and a wait list has begun.  

The University of Michigan-Flint is one of the best colleges and universities in the Midwest according to The Princeton Review. The New York City-based education services company selected the school as one of the institutions it recommends in its "Best in the Midwest" section on its website feature 2009 Best Colleges: Region by Region.  

Capt. HooverStudents interested in engineering now have an opportunity for a paid internship leading to guaranteed full-time employment at a unique military engineering center. Thanks to the efforts of the University of Michigan-Flint Academic Advising and Career Center and a chance meeting with an alumnus.

The Michigan Initiative for Innovation & Entrepreneurship (MIIE) has announced 20 entrepreneurship grants totaling $1.3 million, bolstered with $2.2 million in matching funds from universities and private businesses.
A unique new program, to begin in fall 2008, will help prepare Lapeer High School seniors for a future career in engineering, and give them a jump on their college education.  The University of Michigan-Flint is joining with the Lapeer County Intermediate School District Education and Technology Center to offer the pre-engineering program. 
An abandoned house near downtown Flint is being turned into an Urban Alternatives House (UAH), which will be used as both a classroom and laboratory to teach and explore better ideas for urban living. The UAH located at 519 Garland Street will provide an example of an energy efficient building that can be monitored and used to illustrate the functioning of energy generating devices, storm water management systems and landscape management
