Shandowyn L. Parker, Ph.D., associate professor of health education at the University of Michigan-Flint, will be honored with a Michigan Campus Compact (MCC )Faculty/Staff Community Service-Learning Award. The presentation will be made at the 14th annual Institute: Service-Learning and Civic Engagement, on Tuesday, February 9. This prestigious annual award is the highest MCC bestows on faculty and staff in the state of Michigan.

The list of states that have passed legislation recognizing American Sign Language (ASL) as a foreign language, and permitting high schools and universities to accept it in fulfillment of foreign language requirements for hearing as well as deaf students continues to grow.
The University of Michigan-Flint is now the latest university to officially join the list. On January 27 2010, UM-Flint signed an agreement with Mott Community College (MCC) to allow the transfer of ASL classes students take at MCC.
UM-Flint student nurses are being told that the clinics and hospitals where they will be volunteering in the Dominican Republic are filled with Haitian earthquake victims. Because of the great need, the students will be looking for donations for orthopedic items.

I took the bus to the institute, and my hands were so cold that I couldn’t use them to get the 40 tenge bus fare out of my pocket.” That is how Associate Professor Mary Jo Kietzman Gifford describes her first day traveling to her office at Semey State Pedagogical Institute. It is a teacher-training college in Semey (formerly Sempalatinsk) Kazakhstan.
Enrollment at the University of Michigan-Flint has increased for the Winter 2010 Semester with a 12% growth in graduate and an almost 8% (7.9) jump in undergrad students compared to last year. The overall increase is almost 8% (7.9).
This spring, the campus bookstore will undergo a significant renovation that, once completed will create a more open and inviting space to serve not only the campus but the community of Flint. During the approximately three week renovation, the bookstore will be freshly painted with softer tones, enhanced with upgraded fixtures, and reconfigured to better handle peak shopping periods creating a more enjoyable shopping experience. In addition to the physical changes, an annual donation of $15,000 will be placed in the “Barnes & Noble Scholarship” fund for UM-Flint students.
The recent Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival (KCACTF) held at Saginaw Valley College saw University of Michigan-Flint students win awards for their level of excellence.
