Memorial Service Set for Professor Wigston

There will be a memorial service this Friday, January 9, 1 p.m., at the Brown Funeral Home, 1480 Hill Road, Grand Blanc, for Dr. David Wigston, professor of biology in the University of Michigan-Flint College of Arts and Sciences. He was the former director of the University’s Office of Research. He died at his home on the 29th of December after a long illness.

Dr. David Wigston, professor of biology in the University of Michigan-Flint College of Arts and Sciences, and former director of the University’s Office of Research, died at his home on the 29th of December after a long illness.

Professor Wigston came to UM-Flint in 1996 as director of the Office of Research. He returned to teaching full-time in 2002, serving both the Earth and Resource Science and Biology Departments for the past six-and-a-half years. At the time of his death he was poised to begin a sabbatical.

Wigston was born in the east end of London, England, on December 12, 1943.

He received his PhD in forest ecology at the University of Exeter, UK. While teaching there, he developed a program in environmental science at the University that still is taught there.

He was the first dean of science at the former Northern Territory University (the predecessor of Charles Darwin University) in Australia.

There will be a memorial service this Friday, January 9, 1 p.m., at the Brown Funeral Home, 1480 Hill Road, Grand Blanc.
