University of Michigan-Flint students from the Fine Arts and Education programs, under the artistic direction of Michael C. Sevick, associate professor of art, will begin a special project for the Genesys Hurley Cancer Institute located in Flint. About a dozen students will be involved in the painting of a mural that will be located in the cancer institute’s atrium.

The mural, designed by local artist Fred Bellairs under the direction of Sevick and in consultation with Dr. Rizwan Danish associated with the Institute, will provide a peaceful land and waterscape that includes hands that somewhat encompass the mural. There will be a section at the bottom of this mural for patients to sign allowing the work of art to evolve and change over time as more patients sign it. The intent of the artists is for the mural to serve as a metaphor for healing, and to provide for patients assistance in forming a positive state of mind as they undergo chemotherapy treatment.

There are hundreds of patients served by this facility, whose psychological response to treatment may be greatly impacted through the beatification of this space. The work also provides students the opportunity to engage in service while utilizing their skills and education in the creation of this mural over the course of three weeks working together under the direction of Professor Sevick.

The A.G. Bishop Trust of Flint has provided a generous grant to cover the cost of the project.
