The Skinny

College Goal Sunday was created to increase the number of Michigan students who continue education beyond high school and earn post-secondary degrees.

Financial aid experts will help college-bound Michigan students and their families complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid or FAFSA during statewide College Goal Sunday events on Sunday, February 13, 2011. The Flint-area College Goal Sunday event will be held at the University of Michigan-Flint in Room 109 of the Murchie Science Building.

College Goal Sunday was created to increase the number of Michigan students who continue education beyond high school and earn post-secondary degrees. The FAFSA is required of any student seeking financial aid including grants, loans, and many scholarships.

“We encourage parents to take advantage of this unique opportunity to learn about what financial aid is available to them,” said UM-Flint Financial Aid Director Lori Vedder. “Many parents and students who attend are surprised by the financial help that is available for a college education.”

On Sunday, February 13, from 2 – 4 p.m., UM-Flint financial aid experts will be available to help students and their parents complete and file the FAFSA. Students under 23 years of age are encouraged to attend with a parent or guardian. Parents and students should bring their completed 2010 Federal tax return (1040) if possible, or their W-2 and 1099 forms.

Participants can enter their names for a chance to win valuable prizes, including a $1,000 scholarship, three $500 scholarships, an iPod Nano, and a Dell laptop computer. For more information about College Goal Sunday, visit www.micollegegoal.org.

College Goal Sunday is a collaborative effort of the Michigan Department of Education, the Michigan Student Financial Aid Association, and EduGuide.
