The Skinny

The new rankings provide data and information on schools that offer federal benefits, including tuition and housing assistance, to veterans and active service members.

U.S. News & World Report released its inaugural rankings of the Best Colleges for Veterans to help veterans pursue a college education under the Post-9/11 GI Bill.

The new rankings provide data and information on schools that offer federal benefits, including tuition and housing assistance, to veterans and active service members. The University of Michigan-Flint was ranked 27 among Midwest Regional Universities. In total, there were 234 ranked schools across all 10 U.S. News ranking categories.

According to U.S. News & World Report, all of the Best Colleges for Veterans scored well in terms of graduation rate, faculty resources, reputation, and other markers of academic quality in the 2014 edition of the U.S. News Best Colleges. To qualify for the new rankings, the schools had to be certified for the GI Bill and participate in the Yellow Ribbon Program and Service-members Opportunity Colleges (SOC) Consortium.

“I am thrilled that our efforts to assist student veterans are once again receiving national recognition,” stated Chancellor Ruth J. Person. “We will continue to pursue opportunities to offer outstanding support to our student veterans as they work toward their degrees.”

UM-Flint’s commitment to veterans was strengthened with the addition of a Student Veterans Resource Center designed to provide academic support to the veteran community. Over the years, the university expanded its commitment to include selection as a Tillman Scholar School and the establishment of veteran scholarships. Most recently, the university moved to offer in-state tuition to veterans.
