Student Involvement and Leadership Awards

Each year, the Department of Student Involvement and Leadership recognizes the leadership contributions of students at the University of Michigan-Flint.  We honor those individuals and groups who exhibit exemplary leadership skills, engage with the campus and/or Flint community, problem-solve and develop new ideas or initiatives, while working toward a community that is inclusive of various identities and perspectives.   

Description of each award is listed below. 

 

The Student Involvement and Leadership Awards Ceremony will take place on Thursday, April 12, 2018, at 6:00 p.m. in the Michigan Rooms.

Greek Man of the Year Award

The Greek Man of the Year Award is awarded to one University of Michigan-Flint student who is a current member of a social fraternity on campus. The award recognizes a fraternity man for his outstanding scholarship, leadership, service, and brotherhood during the 2017-2018 academic year.

Greek Woman of the Year Award

The Greek Woman of the Year Award is awarded to one University of Michigan-Flint student who is a current member of a social fraternity on campus. The award recognizes a sorority woman for her outstanding scholarship, leadership, service, and sisterhood during the 2017-2018 academic year.

Outstanding Student Leader Award

This award recognizes a student leader who has shown exceptional leadership during their time at the University of Michigan-Flint.  This individual has demonstrated a commitment to creating positive change on our campus while exhibiting a long-term commitment to the goals of their organization and involvement on campus.   The student embodies important leadership qualities including establishing and achieving goals, motivating others, as well as integrity and inclusiveness.  The nominee should have a cumulative 3.0 grade point average.This award recognizes a student leader who has shown exceptional leadership during their time at the University of Michigan-Flint.  This individual has demonstrated a commitment to creating positive change on our campus while exhibiting a long-term commitment to the goals of their organization and involvement on campus.   The student embodies important leadership qualities including establishing and achieving goals, motivating others, as well as integrity and inclusiveness.  The nominee should have a cumulative 3.0 grade point average.

Student Leader Community Contribution Award

This award recognizes the contribution made by a student to the greater Flint community. Nominees have initiated or participated in a program and/or service that addresses a community issue and has resulted in a positive change for the community/population served.

SIL Emerging Leader Award

The Emerging Leader Award recognizes a student in their first or second year at the University of Michigan-Flint who has made a positive impact on campus.  This student is someone who has been active in a student organization or club sport, demonstrated strong skills in taking the initiative, communication and collaboration with others, while maintaining a 3.0 or above cumulative grade point average.

Club Sports Most Valuable Player Award

This award is given to an individual club sports athlete for positively impacting the team's culture and game environment. Nominees should be individuals who demonstrated strong sportsmanship, and a leadership style that promotes teamwork, open communication, and respect.  The nominee should have a 2.75 grade point average.

Club Sports Officer Leadership Award

This award recognizes an athlete leader who has shown exceptional leadership as an officer (President, VP, Treasurer, Secretary) on the board of a Club Sports Team. This individual has demonstrated a commitment to creating positive change on our campus while exhibiting a long-term commitment to the goals of their organization and involvement on campus.   The student embodies important leadership qualities including establishing and achieving goals, motivating others, as well as integrity and inclusiveness.  The nominee should have a cumulative 3.0 grade point average.

Outstanding Advisor Award

This award recognizes the dedication of student organization faculty or staff advisor.  Nominees should be individuals who have demonstrated a commitment to the organization, effectively motivated the organization to fulfill their mission and goals, and served as a resource.

Outstanding Student Organization Award

This award recognizes a student organization that has demonstrated significant leadership qualities and contributions to the University of Michigan-Flint during the 2017-2018 academic year.  An outstanding organization exhibits strong leadership skills such as teamwork, collaboration, communication, while also implementing initiatives that fulfill the mission of their organization.  The organization is also one that is committed to furthering the university’s mission and positively impacting the quality of student life on campus.

Student Organization Community Contribution Award

This award recognizes the contribution made by a recognized student organization to the greater Flint community.  The organization has provided programs and/or services to the community and utilized its membership in planning and implementing the initiative, with the goal of having a positive impact on the community/population served. 

SIL Inclusive Community Award

This award recognizes a student organization that demonstrated an active commitment to issues of diversity, inclusion, and social justice. The organization has demonstrated this active commitment through its programming and initiatives.
