Megan Keiser, RN, DNP, CNRN, SCRN, ACNS-BC, NP-C

Interim Director of Undergraduate Nursing Affairs, Assistant Professor

Dr. Keiser is the Interim Director of Undergraduate Nursing Affairs and an Assistant Professor in the School of Nursing. She received her BSN in 1986 and her MS in Medical-Surgical Nursing in 1990, both from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. She completed a Certificate as an Adult Nurse Practitioner from California State University, Long Beach in 1996 and received her Doctor of Nursing Practice degree from Wayne State University in 2012. She is board certified as a Certified Neuroscience Registered Nurse, a Stroke Certified Registered Nurse, an Advanced Clinical Nurse Specialist, and as a Nurse Practitioner. She has been practicing as a Neurosurgery Nurse Practitioner for over 20 years and joined the faculty in the School of Nursing at the University of Michigan, Flint in 2013. She has been active in many professional nursing organizations and completed a term in 2015 as the President of the American Association of Neuroscience Nurses. 

 

TEACHING

Dr. Keiser is lead faculty for the Adult-Geriatric Acute Care Nurse Practitioner clinical track which is a four semester sequence of theory and clinical practicum courses. Additionally, Dr. Keiser plans simulation activities for students in undergraduate and graduate nursing programs as well as interprofessional simulation activities with students in other healthcare-related programs. Dr. Keiser also teaches in the undergraduate nursing program in Medical-Surgical Nursing related to critical care. Additionally, she serves as a frequent guest lecturer on neuroscience topics in other nursing courses. Dr. Keiser also teaches and chairs DNP student research projects (NUR 903).

 

RESEARCH AND SCHOLARSHIP

Dr. Keiser is conducting clinical research in the area of concussion prevention and management to improve evidence-based practice for patients with concussion. Her current research is aimed at improving the knowledge of health care providers in urgent an emergent care centers as to the identification and management of concussion in patients of all ages. Additionally, Dr. Keiser is involved in injury prevention research and is currently studying the effectiveness of a Distracted Driving Prevention Program in undergraduate college students. 

Dr. Keiser also has a pedagogical research interest and is studying the effective use of simulation in the educational preparation of Adult-Geriatric Acute Care Nurse Practitioners as well as the use of simulation to strengthen the interdisciplinary health care team.

 

SERVICE

Dr. Keiser serves as the chair of the Undergraduate Faculty Committee. She also co-chairs the School of Nursing Governing Faculty Committee and serves as an ex officio member of the School of Nursing Executive Committee. She also serves on the Committee of Economic Status of the Faculty and the Scholarships, Awards, and Special Events Committee for the University of Michigan-Flint. Further, Dr. Keiser remains active in many local and national nursing organizations. She volunteers her time performing concussion screenings for student athletes as well as helmet fittings for children.
