Adaptive Release
Adaptive release allows an Instructor to created custom learning paths through course content and activities. Content items, discussions, assessments, assignments, or other activities can be released to students based on a set of criteria including: date and time, specific users, group membership, institution role, grades or attempts on a particular test or assignment, or review status of another item in the course. When using adaptive release, it is best to go to the Modify Item area, make sure the item is set to available, and remove any date restrictions set there.
To create a basic Adaptive Release rule, use the first option: Adaptive Release . This allows for a single rule: Date or Membership or Gradebook Item or Review Status. To use any of these in combination you will need to use the Adaptive Release: Advanced .
To create a Rule in Adaptive Release
Step 1: Click the
button to the right of the assignment, test, item, or folder you would like to create a rule for.
Step 2: Choose Adaptive Release from the list of options.

Step 3: You now have the option to add date, membership, gradebook item, and review status restirictions. You do not need to add all of these, usually one or two will be enough. Note that any restrictions set in the basic adaptive release rule will be used together. For example: If you set date and membership restrictions, the person (or people) you have selected will only be able to see the item during the chosen dates.
- Date: Displays the item only during the date range you have chosen.
- Membership: Displays the item only to the students chosen.
- Gradebook item: Displays the item only to those that have the necessary grade for the selected item in the gradebook. If there is an exclamation mark in the gradebook it will not count.
- Review Status: Displays the item only to those that have marked the selected item as reviewed.
Step 4: When you have set all the restrictions you wish to use, click the
button at the bottom of the page.
Step 5: You will recieve a reciept that the action has completed, click the
button to continue.
To Create a Rule in Adaptive Release: Advanced
Step 1: Click the
button to the right of the assignment, test, item, or folder you would like to create a rule for.
Step 2: Choose Adaptive Release: Advanced from the list of options.

You will notice that any basic adaptive release rules you may have created will be listed here an an individual rule.
Step 3: Click the Add Rule button on the menu bar. You will see the Add Rule page.
Step 4: Give this rule a name. Remember rules can be reused so give it a descriptive name.
Step 5: Click the
button . You will now see the Manage Criteria screen.
You can add criteria to this rule to narrow the ability of users to view this content item. Once rules are established and applied to an item, visibility of that item is restricted to those users who meet the criteria of the rules. You can add multiple rules to a single item and once a user meets any of the rules the content will be available.

Adaptive Release: Advanced allows for a wide variety of access for different users based on different criteria and is a very powerful tool. To best describe how to go about setting up rules for the items, we will run through a few examples for specific situations. Based on these examples you should be able to customize your rules to fit your unique requirements.
Example 1
You may have a student who knows they will be unable to take a test during the established test time.
Using the scenario above you could use the Advanced Adaptive Release to establish two Rules. The first rule would be to allow the specific users access and the second rule would be a Date rule to open the test to the rest of the class.
Step 1: Follow steps 1 - 5 from Create a Rule in Adaptive Release: Advanced. I would recommend naming this rule "Early for (student)" so it can be easily identified later.
Step 2: Choose the Add Membership button at the top of the page.

Step 3: When adding membership you can either add select users or groups. You can only add groups if you have already created groups in your course. To add users, either type in their usernames (seperated by commas) or click browse and search for your students. You click browse next to usernames and then click search without entering any search criteria it will display all the students enrolled in the class and you can check the ones you wish to add.
When you have selected all the users and groups you wanted included in this rule, click the
button at the bottom of the page. You are now back at the manage criteria page for this rule.
Step 4: Now select the Add Date button at the top of the page.
Step 5: Choose the dates you wish the item to be available to the students you just selected for the membership criteria. Remember these are the students that are able to see the test earlier or later than the rest of the class. Click the
button at the bottom of the page.
Step 6: We are finished with the first rule, so click the
button at the bottom of the page to return to the list of rules for this item. you will see the first rule we have created listed here.

Step 7: Click the Add Rule button at the top of the page. I would recommend naming this rule "Rest of Class" or something similar so that you will know what this rule is for in the future. Click the
button to move to the manage criteria page.
Step 8: Select the Add Date button at the top of the page and select the dates the item should be available for the rest of the class. Then click the
button at the bottom of the page to return to the Manage Criteria page.
Step 9: We are finished with the second rule for this class, so you can now click the
button at the bottom of the page to return to the list of rules for this item. You will now see two rule for this item. The first rule is for the students that have access to the item early, and the second is for the rest of the class.

Notice that you can modify a rule with the modify button to the right, or remove it by checking the box to the left and clicking the remove button at the top of the page.
Example 2
An instructor creates a content folder called Unit 1 and makes the item available in Course Document. The instructor wants Unit 1 to remain unavailable to students until they have marked the Syllabus ‘Reviewed' AND scored a 10 on a syllabus quiz.
The instructor would need to establish a rule to apply to the Unit 1 folder. That rule would be established in the Advanced Adaptive Release section and would use two criteria: review status and gradebook item.
Step 1: Locate the Unit 1 folder in the edit view and click the
button.
Step 2: Select Adaptive Release: Advanced from the Manage screen.
Step 3: Click Add Rule button on the menu bar. You will see the Add Rule page.
Step 4: Give this rule a name. Remember you can create more than one rule for an item so give it a descriptive name. (I will call mine open Unit 1). Click the
button. You will now see the Manage Criteria screen.
Step 5: The student needs to have reviewed the syllabus first so click Add Review Status at the top of the page.
Step 6: This allows us to select an item from the course that should be reviewed first. Click the
button and navigate the the Syllabus. Select Syllabus from the course map. And click the
button.

Step 7: Next we want to set the criteria that the student score a 10 on the syllabus quiz. To do this we select the Add Gradebook Item button.

Step 8: This displays the gradebook item criteria page. From here we select a gradebook item and then the condition that must be met. Click the
button. Make sure never to choose the item you are regulating access to as the gradebook item that must be completed first.
Step 9: Now you should see that there are two criteria set for the rule called open Unit 1. Notice that the criteria are Review Status AND Gradebook Item. (You can not have an OR in the criteria of a single rule.)
Step 10: Click the
button . You will see the Rules for this item. Click the
button again to return to the Manage menu for this item.
