Sexuality and AgingThis course relates to the resident care management domain of nursing home practice, as identified by the National Association of Boards of Examiners of Long Term Care Administrators, test specification areas 1.1 and 1.2. The course takes a broad view of sexuality as a part of one’s identity across the lifespan. Although sexual intercourse is often equated with sexuality, this course will consider sexuality in broad terms. For instance, a resident’s need to think of himself/ herself as a man or a woman, or the need for physical touch and closeness even when it does not lead to sexual intercourse, are examples of sexuality and sexual need and expression. The course covers physical and psychological changes in older adult sexuality, sexuality and chronic illness, and resident care needs broadly related to sexuality. This information is particularly relevant for nursing home administrators because older adult sexuality is a topic that does not receive much attention. However, resident care that does not acknowledge and respect the sexuality of its residents overlooks an important aspect of resident care. |
