Weighting Grades in the Grade Center

Blackboard enables instructors to designate a weight for each Grade Center item to determine the final grade. Grade Center weights may be adjusted either by category or item. With Weight by Category, grades are weighted by the category as they are assigned. For example, all Assignments will carry the same weight and all Exams will carry the same weight.

Step 1: From within your Blackboard course, click Control Panel.

Step 2: From the Control Panel, click the Grade Center link located in the Assessment area.

Step 3: Once inside the Grade Center, it is now time to set up categories. To do so, click the Manage button within the toolbar, and then choose Categories from the drop-menu.

Step 4: To add a new Category, such as Participation, click the Add Category button.

Step 5: Assign the category a name and, if desired, a description, and then click Submit. Repeat steps to add additional categories.

Step 6: Next modify the Weighted Total column to assign weights to each category. If your Grade Center already includes a Weighted Total column, click the options drop-menu button, and then select Modify Column.

Step 7: Scroll down to the Select Columns area in order to designate weighted columns and their values. Beneath the Categories to Select heading, click to highlight a category, and then click the arrow to move the category into the calculation table.

Step 8: Once the category is selected, choose the appropriate weight percentage. Repeat these s teps for each category. Once the weighted values have been assigned, click submit to save changes.

Step 9: Individual columns must now be assigned to weighted categories. For instance, in order to assign a Mid-Term Exam column to the Test category, click the options button and choose Modify Column from the drop-menu.

Within the Column Information section, select the appropriate Category. Once selected, click Submit to save changes.
