Available to teachers across the nation, this series of fully online courses will show you how to design and deliver a quality course via the Internet.

All courses qualify for SB-CEU credit.

Section One (Required courses)

Blackboard Basics for K-12 or Blackboard K-12 Waiver (no fee)


Using Blackboard, you will learn to prepare and post documents, use outside resources, create discussion threads, tests, and quizzes in a course of your own. Prerequisite knowledge requires basic computer skills. Upon successful completion 2 SB-CEU (Michigan) or 2 IACET CEU (International Association for Continuing Education Training) will be awarded. This course is instructor-facilitated. The instructor will grade and provide feedback for the assignments. You may complete the 20 hours of coursework at your own pace. All activities must be completed prior to the course close date.

Intro to K-12 Teaching Online or Teaching Online Waiver (no fee)


You will learn the technologies educators are using all over the world to present online courses. Through participation in this course you will learn what tools work best within your classroom. Basic computer skills are a prerequisite for this course. Upon successful completion 1 SB-CEU (Michigan) or 1 IACET CEU (International Association for Continuing Education Training) will be awarded. This course is instructor-facilitated. The instructor will grade and provide feedback for the assignments. You may complete the 10 hours of coursework at your own pace. All activities must be completed prior to the course close date.

Intensive Course Development


This hands-on online course walks you through step-by-step online course development. Master the components of Blackboard and major elements of instructional design. You'll create the core of an online course, including learning objectives, syllabus and course material for at least two complete weeks of instruction. Introduction to Online Teaching and Blackboard Basics (or waivers) are prerequisites for this course. This course is instructor-led. Expect to spend approximately 10 hours per week on coursework.

Copyright Issues in Online Teaching


This course provides an overview of copyright issues for educators at all levels and includes information specific to the online environment. Topics include your responsibilities regarding student work, graphic sources and rules for Web-based course content, fair use, database and digital rights protection, and such legislation as The Digital Millennium Copyright Act, the Public Domain Enhancement Act and the TEACH Act. The prerequisite knowledge for this course is a basic understanding of computers. Upon successful completion 2 SB-CEU (Michigan) or 2 IACET CEU (International Association for Continuing Education Training) will be awarded. You may complete the 20 hours of coursework at your own pace. All activities must be completed prior to the course close date.

Course Quality Assessment


Using an Excel-based tool, faculty, teachers and trainers will assess the quality of their courses according to 60 standards and sub standards related to technology usability and instructional design. This tool provides measurement criteria, benchmarks, ratings and a weighting system to provide an overview that is as objective as possible. Basic computer skills are a prerequisite for this course. Upon successful completion 2 SB-CEU (Michigan) or 2 IACET CEU (International Association for Continuing Education Training) will be awarded. You may complete the 20 hours of coursework at any pace. All activities must be completed prior to the course close date.

Introduction to Captivate


Learn to create Flash-based demonstrations and simulations using Macromedia Captivate. Using a step-by-step approach, you will create your own simulations and capture onscreen actions of all kinds. You will also learn to add captions, images, sound and animated text. Basic computer skills are a prerequisite for this course. This course awards 2 SB-CEUs (Michigan) or 2 IACET CEUs (International Association for Continuing Education Training). This course is instructor-facilitated. The instructor will grade and provide feedback for the assignments. You may complete the 20 hours of coursework at any pace. All activities must be completed prior to the course close date.

Advanced Captivate


Advanced Captivate expands on the introductory Captivate course teaching you how to publish files with sound and student interactivity. You will learn to add text entry boxes, buttons, and interactive quizzes within a simulation or demonstration. The prerequisite to this course is Intro to Captivate. Upon successful completion 2 SB-CEU (Michigan) or 2 IACET CEU (International Association for Continuing Education Training) will be awarded. This course is instructor-facilitated. The instructor will grade and provide feedback for the assignments. You may complete the 20 hours of coursework at your own pace. All activities must be completed prior to the course close date.

Blogs in Education

Blogging is a simple yet powerful way for enhancing teaching and learning. This self-paced, instructor-facilitated online course focuses on the implications of blogging in educational settings. Participants will study how other educators are using blogs to deepen learning and increase student achievements, explore Web-based tools for finding and subscribing to educational blogs, identify strategies for implanting a blog into their content area and create their own Weblog. This is a 10 contact-hour Web-based course delivered through Blackboard.

Creating Audio Using Audacity

This is a five-hour, instructor-facilitated course in which learners create and edit an audio file using Audacity shareware. There is no textbook; however, learners will need a microphone (or headset with earphones, if the computer does not have speakers). You must complete the coursework within the allotted time-frame in order to receive CEUs.

Grab-n-Go Graphics

This is a 10-hour course that will introduce you to the most common terminology used in discussing graphics, and will provide step-by-step lessons in graphics search, capture and editing using popular, free software. It qualifies for one SB-CEU.

Screencasting: Creating Mini-multimedia Lessons Using Jing


Have you ever had the feeling that using text to express yourself through online conversation is too cumbersome yet not enough? Do you wish sometimes that instead of typing at people you could show them what you are talking about? Now there is an easy way to do this. There are both free and commercial screencasting software programs which enable you to record everything happening on your screen; point, click, scroll, navigate and such an application can follow your every action. This online class introduces you to ways of how you may use screencasts in educational or training settings and enables you to put your skills into action by learning how to use Jing, a free screencasting program. This course requires 10 hours of coursework that must be completed during the allotted time-frame.

Collaborative Learning Using Google Docs

Create new opportunities for student collaboration that takes place anywhere, anytime using free online tools. Engage your students in approaching writing as a process which includes peer review and multi-stage revision, rather than procrastination and a single night of crammed writing. Provide instant feedback through real-time editing and commenting functionality. Explore these options and more, using the Google Docs software suite.

Creating an Online Experience

UM-Flint has developed a certificate program that helps K12 teachers meet the new requirements for an online experience. In this course, you will learn to build a web page using a free online tool, design a basic blog and create an online quiz while reviewing current issues regarding online copyright and ethics in today's classroom. This course is instructor-facilitated. The instructor will grade and provide feedback for the assignments. Upon successful completion 1.5 SB-CEU (Michigan) or 1.5 IACET CEU (International Association for Continuing Education Training) will be awarded. You may complete the 15 hours of coursework at your own pace. All activities must be completed prior to the course close date.
