This is an online, instructor-facilitated course for K-12 teachers interested in the online classroom. It will immerse them in the online learning just as their students would experience it.

Course Objectives: Upon completion, learners will:

• Understand the basic concepts and procedures inherent in online teaching.
• Be able to use the Blackboard components to add, edit and delete information.
• Communicate with students using the discussion board, virtual classroom and e-mail.
• Create exams, assignments and online gradebooks.

The Intro to K-12 Online Teaching is an online course that is teacher-facilitated, which is level of student-instructor interaction between a totally self-paced course and one that is instructor led. You can go through the course at your own pace but an instructor is available to help whenever you need it along the way.

This is a basic-level course and will prepare you to begin to develop an online course or course supplement. It is also a prerequisite to the UM-Flint Intensive Course Development class.

• Understand the pedagogical concepts, trends and mechanics of online teaching and learning.
• Recognize the types of learning tools and resources available online.
• Be able to assess your abilities and interest in teaching online and using technology.
• Be able to apply the principles learned in this course to begin creating an online course or supplement.

This instructor-led, online course is a hands-on course for educators preparing to teach online. The course will lead instructors through the process of developing their own online course. Different types of content will be examined, and tools for evaluating your course will be discussed.

Course Objective: Educators will

• Experience first-hand what it is like to be an online learner.
• Develop a full understanding of the principles and methods of developing a course to be delivered online.
• Master the components of the Blackboard Learning Management System (LMS).
• Create the core of an online course, including learning objectives, syllabus and course material for at least two complete weeks of instruction.

Prerequisite: Introduction to Online Teaching and Blackboard Basics (or waivers), faculty or K-12 versions

Learn to create Flash-based demonstrations and simulations using Macromedia Captivate. Using a task-based approach, learners will create their own demonstrations and simulations while learning key features and best practices.

• Plan a recording.
• Set initial recording options and movie preferences.
• Recording movies. Capture onscreen action of all kinds.
• Add captions, images, and ther options to your movie.
• Change movie and object timing using the Timeline.
• Publish and Preview movies in any of a variety of formats.

This course is designed for educators who would like to use digital photos and Flash in the classroom. This four-week course will cover design fundamentals and their practical applications for educators; technical, practical and legal aspects of using clip art, stock photography and sound; digital imaging including file extensions, resizing and retouching; and using a scanner and digital camera to capture images.

You will customize digital images and create Flash files using 30-day trial versions of Photoshop 4.0 and Flash 8.0.

This 40 contact-hour course is available to all learners but was designed for educators who would like to use Web technology in the classroom. Learners will have weekly readings, participate in online discussions, research Web design topics, explore the steps required to build an effective Web site, and use SeaMonkey Composer, an open source Web development tool, to design their own site.

Course Materials:
This course is entirely online. Each lesson is based on lecture notes accompanied by hands-on assignments. The course also contains a quiz and two discussion forums. To develop a Web project, participants will use Mozilla's SeaMonkey Composer. The Mozilla Web site can be found at http://www.mozilla.org/projects/seamonkey/. This course provides an overview of copyright issues for educators at all levels, and includes information specific to the online environment. Topics include instructors’ responsibilities regarding student work, graphic sources and rules for Web-based course content, fair use, database and digital rights protection, and such legislation as The Digital Millennium Copyright Act, the Public Domain Enhancement Act and the TEACH Act.
