Conflict Resolution Specialist Certificate
The University of Michigan-Flint Office of Extended Learning, in conjunction with Alternative Dispute Resolution Consortium (ADRC), can help prepare you to become a conflict resolution specialist through this four-month, noncredit program.
More and more, courts and businesses are turning to mediation as an alternative to other legal methods, and the demand for skilled mediators is expected to remain steady.
The Conflict Resolution Specialist Certificate program accommodates all levels of education and experience, including those already in the legal field, such as judges, lawyers and paralegals. In fact, the skills learned in this program can benefit individuals and organizations in nearly every job sector.
Course 1: Basic Mediation (40 classroom hours), $635
Discover the foundational skills and processes of facilitative mediation, along with the study of different forms of alternative dispute resolution. Topics include: introduction to dispute settlement; conflict theory, principles of negotiation, mediation process, role of a positive neutral (‘peacemaker’), managing impasse, communication skills, and ethics. Successful completion of this program will equip each student with the life skills and tools necessary to mediate conflicts and qualify for advanced mediation training programs
Course 2: General Civil Mediation (40 classroom hours), $1,095
Prerequisite: Completion of Basic Mediation Training, Juris Doctorate Degree or other relevant experience/training may be considered.*
This Michigan State Court Administrative Office (SCAO) MCR 2.411 approved training course includes: attorney’s role in the mediation process, advanced conflict resolution concepts, court processes, diversity issues, mediation process and techniques, negotiation dynamics, dealing with multiple parties and standards of conduct for mediators.
Course 3: Michigan General Law for Non-attorney Mediators (8 classroom hours), $300
An overview/summary of Michigan basic laws, rules and guidelines governing Michigan civil actions for mediators who will practice in the area of commercial and domestic relations mediation. (SCAO approved training)
Course 4: Domestic Relations Mediation (40 classroom hours), $1,195
Prerequisite: Completion of Basic Mediation Training or Juris Doctorate Degree,or other relevant experience/ training may be considered.*
This comprehensive SCAO MCR 3.216 approved training course is for mediators who want to deal with all types of family (traditional & alternative lifestyles) and divorce issues. Topics include: family mediation theory and process, emotional issues, advanced communication skills, children’s issues, custody and support, parenting time arrangements, property division, power balancing, domestic violence and abuse, tax implications, pension and other financial concerns, building future relationships and ethics. Course 5: Domestic Violence Screening Protocol (8 classroom hours), $350
Prerequisite: Domestic Relations Mediation
This SCAO MCR 3.216 approved training is a requirement to participate as a qualified domestic relations mediator. Topics include: determining the appropriateness of mediation as it relates to domestic abuse and child neglect, nature and dynamics of abuse, violence theory, emotional issues, communication skills, conducting the domestic violence screening protocol, specialized mediation process and techniques, balancing of power, personal protection orders and no contact orders, safe termination of mediation and confidentiality.
Course 6: Arbitration (16 classroom hours) March 8-9, 2010, 9 a.m.-5:30 p.m., $650
Prerequisite: General Civil Mediation
This training course will explain the role of a positive neutral along the dispute resolution continuum from facilitative mediation, evaluative mediation, med-arb, to arbitration. Topics include: alternative dispute resolution continuum, an introduction to evaluative mediation and med-arb, arbitration basics including case management, conducting the arbitration hearing, evidence evaluation, rendering a decision, post award procedures, legal and ethical issues in arbitration, challenges that confront arbitrators, and preserving neutrality.
Course 7: Building Your Future - Starting a Practice (8 classroom hours), $300

Topics include: how to build, promote and manage your business effectively, developing a strategic business plan, financial planning, marketing, developing your niche, networking, ethical considerations, long term success and day to day operations.
Course 8: Court ADR Experience – General Civil Mediation (4 experiential hours), $95
Observe the court alternative dispute resolution process. Classes are held off campus at a court location to be arranged by ADRC instructors.
