Scholarships

The Return to Learn Scholarship program awards one-time scholarships to students who have left the educational environment for at least one year and are interested in the opportunity to continue learning. Scholarships are awarded in the first semester in which the student re-enters college; depending on availability of funds, awards are $100 per credit hour up to $1,000 in total.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there money available to me for my education?
Yes. There are numerous financial aid sources available from the state, your company, union, and school that can greatly reduce the cost of your education. You may also apply for the University of Michigan-Flint, Return to Learn Scholarship, which awards up to $1,000 your first semester here.

Can I build on my previous coursework?
Yes. In most cases, class credits transfer easily from one institution to another and do not expire, even after years between classes.

Is there any flexibility in scheduling?
Absolutely! We offer evening courses, mixed-mode (part on campus, part online), and fully online courses.

What is "Return to Learn" and why now?
As much as we'd like to take credit for the idea, the "Return to Learn" program actually emerged from Lt. Governor John Cherry (UM-Flint MPA ’84) and his bi-partisan commission on higher education in Michigan. The Cherry Commission's goal is to re-enroll as many adults as possible from the 1.5 million working-age Michigan adults who have experienced some college, but have no degree or credential. In addition to the personal benefits of higher education for individuals and their families, completing their education will be critical to the state's ability to attract information- and technology-based industries and jobs to Michigan in the years ahead.
