YOUR FUTURE, IN YOUR HANDS
![]() | Steve Whitman’s Story |
In 1976, Steve Whitman hired into Buick as an apprentice electrician. For the next 20 years, the Buick City complex was Steve’s second home.
In 1997, amid another automotive downturn that claimed the jobs of many of his friends, Buick offered some senior workers a voluntary paid layoff if they agreed to enroll in college full-time for one semester. Steve jumped at the opportunity, enrolled at UM-Flint and excelled.
On December 19, 2004, Steve got his degree. He also received the Maize and Blue Award for his inspiring story of perseverance, and he was asked to be the ceremony’s student speaker.
Steve told attendees that he planned to retire from GM in 2005 after 30 years, and continue his education at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor for a Master of Arts in Education with Teacher Certification. He told the audience that he looked forward to starting his second career in his 50s, as a high school history teacher.
