Students enrolled in EDT 521 are required during the course of the semester to complete 3 tech units (below) per registered academic credit hour. You may choose any combination of courses that will comprise at least 3-5 for one academic credit, 6-9 for two academic credits, or 9-11 for three academic credits.

Blogging is a simple yet powerful way for enhancing teaching and learning. This self-paced, instructor-facilitated online course focuses on the implications of blogging in educational settings. Participants will study how other educators are using blogs to deepen learning and increase student achievements, explore Web-based tools for finding and subscribing to educational blogs, identify strategies for implanting a blog into their content area and create their own Weblog. This is a 10 contact-hour Web-based course delivered through Blackboard.

  • List ways of implementing blogs into teaching.
  • Identify free online services that allow for searching and subscribing to education-related blogs.
  • Apply any of the available strategies or find a new way for using blogs in your teaching.

Copyright Issues in Online Teaching

This course provides an overview of copyright issues for educators at all levels, and includes information specific to the online environment. Topics include instructors’ responsibilities regarding student work, graphic sources and rules for Web-based course content, fair use, database and digital rights protection, and such legislation as The Digital Millennium Copyright Act, the Public Domain Enhancement Act and the TEACH Act.

This is an instructor-facilitated course designed for K-12 teachers. It is designed to help you learn the basics on acquiring pictures with a digital camera, with a scanner, by screen capture, and from the Internet and learn the basics with regard to file types, file size issues, resolution, layers, and transparency.


Course Objectives: Upon completion, you will be able to

  • Briefly describe the history of the use of images in curriculum.
  • List major roles of images in teaching and learning.
  • Compare the attributes of printed and digital images.
  • Describe the different techniques of obtaining and creating digital images.
  • List ideas for integrating a scanner and a digital camera into curricular activities.
  • List and briefly describe some popular image-editing software.
  • Do basic image editing.

This instructor-led, online course is a hands-on course for educators preparing to teach online. The course will lead instructors through the process of developing their own online course. Different types of content will be examined, and tools for evaluating your course will be discussed.


Course Objective: Educators will

  • Experience first-hand what it is like to be an online learner.
  • Develop a full understanding of the principles and methods of developing a course to be delivered online.
  • Master the components of the Blackboard Learning Management System (LMS).
  • Create the core of an online course, including learning objectives, syllabus and course material for at least two complete weeks of instruction.

The Intro to K-12 Online Teaching is an online course that is teacher-facilitated, which is level of student-instructor interaction between a totally self-paced course and one that is instructor led. Intro to Graphic Design for Educators

This course is designed for educators who would like to use digital photos and Flash in the classroom. This four-week course will cover design fundamentals and their practical applications for educators; technical, practical and legal aspects of using clip art, stock photography and sound; digital imaging including file extensions, resizing and retouching; and using a scanner and digital camera to capture images.

Web Development for Beginners

This 40 contact-hour course is available to all learners but was designed for educators who would like to use Web technology in the classroom. Learners will have weekly readings, participate in online discussions, research Web design topics, explore the steps required to build an effective Web site, and use SeaMonkey Composer, an open source Web development tool, to design their own site.


Course Materials:
This course is entirely online. Each lesson is based on lecture notes accompanied by hands-on assignments. The course also contains a quiz and two discussion forums. To develop a Web project, participants will use Mozilla's SeaMonkey Composer. The Mozilla Web site can be found at http://www.mozilla.org/projects/seamonkey/. To find system requirements, compatibility information and installation instructions for the latest version of SeaMonkey, learners might want to visit the installation instructions page.
