All majors are encouraged to meet with their Africana Studies advisors
at least twice during each semester or term that they are enrolled.
Students may choose from a wide range of special topic courses to
round out their course of studies, such as AFA 391, 395, or 396.
Area Options The University requires the completion of two area
options. For a major in Africana Studies, one of the area options
must be a foreign language recognized as being related to the African
experience. These include: Ewe, French, German, Portuguese, Spanish,
Swahili, Twi, Yoruba, or other appropriate languages when offered.
Some of the applicable foreign languages are not offered at UM-Flint.
This requirement can be met through transfer credits, and/or test
results from other schools. See the catalog section entitled "General
