Alvin D. Loving Junior Faculty Initiative

A member of the founding faculty of the Flint campus, Dr. Alvin D. Loving had the distinction of being the first tenured minority faculty member on this campus. This junior faculty program was established in his name to recognize his pioneering efforts.

The University of Michigan-Flint has established the Alvin D. Loving Junior Faculty Initiative to provide released time for junior minority faculty members who have demonstrated high potential of professional advancement and continued development at UM-Flint and have demonstrated a commitment to diversity, or whose research/courses furthered minority interests; or who have graduated froma Historically Black college or university

The successful candidate will be appointed by the Provost with the consent of the Chancellor as the Alvin D. Loving Junior Faculty for one year with released time of one three-credit-hour course per semester. No more than one appointment as the Alvin D. Loving Junior Faculty is available.

Eligibility

 

Eligible for nomination are faculty members holding a regular appointment at the rank of assistant or associate professor and possessing the following qualifications:

  • Demonstrated a commitment to diversity, or whose research/courses furthered minority interest.
  • Generous service to the professional, university or general community.
  • Conspicuous ability in teaching.
  • Recognized scholarship or creative activities.
  • High potential for professional advancement and continued professional development at UM-Flint.
  • Faculties who have graduated from a Historically Black college or university are especially invited to apply for this award. 

 

Nominations

Nominations may be made by faculty, staff, or students and should be submitted to Scholarships, Awards and Special Events, c/o Provost's Office, 229 University Pavilion. The letter of nomination is due by January 23, 2012 and supporting documents are due by March 12, 2012.  The nomination packet will be kept active for three academic years.

Required Supporting Documentation

 

  • Nominee's vita.
  • Letter of support from appropriate department chair (dean/area coordinator in the case of SOM, director in the case of SHPS) or supervisor.
  • Evidence of service to the professional, university or general community.
  • Evidence of conspicuous ability in teaching.
  • Evidence of recognized scholarship or creative activities.
  • Evidence of high potential for professional advancement and continued professional development at UM-Flint.
  • Up to three letters of support.
