Advising

The Department of Psychology takes seriously its responsibility to provide undergraduate students with access to courses, research opportunities, and advisers. As partners in your academic success, the department staff encourages you to take time to fully explore the information and links we have provided for you. By becoming an informed student, you will have control of your progress toward your degree.

Some of the most common issues we can help you with include:

  • Academic advising for the psychology major/ minor
  • Giving recommendations for courses related to your interests
  • Providing transfer student information
  • Coordinating petitions
  • Confirming Graduation status

All psychology majors and minors are required to meet with their academic advisor at least twice per year. This will help to ensure that you are on track with your academic plans and program requirements.

Online Psychology students have the option of completing advising meetings by telephone or BlueJeans (see instructions below).

    Advising Appointments

All students are required to meet with their academic advisor at lease twice per academic year. Remember, the primary role is to guide the student through the process of completing both the departmental and university requirements for a Psychology degree, as well as discuss faculty mentoring, career and graduate school plans, and any other questions or concerns.

All questions relating to the program of study and degree requirements should be directed to your academic advisor.

Instructions for participating in a BlueJeans appointment:

    • A few days before your appointment, your advisor will schedule the meeting on Bluejeans and you will get an alert through your University of Michigan email. It is best to conduct this meeting on a computer or laptop, but it is possible to do it on your phone if necessary.
    • A few minutes before your appointment time, click on "join meeting" in the email notification from your advisor.
    • Choose to use your computer screen if you have one. If not, then choose to use your phone.
    • Click “join w/ browser”
    • “Use computer Audio” is recommended as you will be able to see more information that the advisor shares with you. If necessary, you can use your phone.
    • Make sure you have audio and visual and that your microphone and webcam are not muted. If you have no webcam, then audio is sufficient.
