Selection Process

Although we are limited in the number of projects selected for MURF, projects may have more than one student.  However for logistical purposes, we ask that each project is represented by no more than two people. Each student who plans to participate must submit an application.

Should we exceed the number of applicants we can accept, a MURF selection panel will select student representatives. Each student will have a chance to do a brief presentation for the panel. After decisions are made, students wlll be notified. Decisions will be made based on the following criteria (in order of importance):

  1. Topic of research: Is this a topic that is pertinent to issues faced by our state representatives?
  2. Organization:  How well organized is the research (clear objectives, reliable methodology, etc.)?  Although the actual poster presentation does not have to be completed during the selection process, the research (objectives, methodologies, summaries, etc.) should be clearly defined.
  3. Class standing:  Priority will be given to juniors and seniors (55 credit or more completed)
  4. Demography:  We look to represent students of different academic backgrounds, ages, gender, race, and hometowns (for balanced legislative representation).

We will contact every MURF applicant to inform them on our decision
