What role can a UROP student play in my research project?
UROP student assistants can aid you in a variety of areas including (but not limited to): conducting library research, assisting in book and/or course development, laboratory/survey research, transcription, participating in community-based research, performance arts, and computer technology applications. Assignments can be as diverse as your research allows.
How much can a student earn to work on my project?
UROP allows a student to earn a maximum of $500 per semester during the Fall and Winter terms and $250 per semester during the Spring and Summer terms. In all, a student can earn up to $1,500** for the entire academic year.
We have divided the UROP year to accommodate our annual budget:
Semester | Dates | Maximum amount of award |
Winter | January 1- April 30 | $500 |
Spring | May 1 - June 30 | $250 |
Summer | July 1 - August 31 | $250 |
Fall | September 1 - December 31 | $500 |
**based on available funding
What are some advantages of working with a UROP student?
UROP students can bring enthusiasm and a fresh viewpoint to the project. Equally as important, UROP students can provide much needed assistance in expediting your research by doing important tasks time may not allow you to do yourself.
What are reasonable expectations of a UROP student?
With training, undergraduate student researchers can make significant contributions to the research project. Initially, less experienced researchers may need closer supervision. But over time, the student will be able to increase his/her level of participation and become a more independent worker. Faculty sponsors are encouraged to meet one-on-one with the student to review their progress.
What if my student assistant only has limited knowledge about research?
How do I register my project for UROP?
You can add your project to UROP by simply filling out the Faculty Application Form. We will take your project and add it to our Project listings.
Once you are ready to begin a project, your student(s) must have completed the online application form, at least one module in PEERRS, and a UROP Contract. (*Note: if you are continuing with an ongoing project for additional semesters, an Extension form must be provided for each semester the student works*).
Who will select the student(s) to work on my project?
Past assessments have indicated that faculty work better with students they personally select. However, the Office of Research can provide assistance in locating interested students in the event that you don't have an assistant in mind.
How is the student’s time recorded?
All students are required to submit bi-weekly timesheets. Timesheet due dates; which correspond with the University's schedule; are listed on the timesheets themselves will also be communicated as a reminder from the UROP staff. Faculty sponsors (or an approved signer) are responsible for endorsing the timesheets prior to submission to the Office of Research.
What if I experience a problem with my student?
Contact the Office of Research if you experience performance or communication issues with your student. Our staff will be happy to work with you to resolve the problem. If a resolution cannot be made, you have the option to remove a student from your project, using a Student Dismissal Form.
