Frequently Asked Questions for UROP Faculty

What is the role of UROP student in a research project?

UROP provides students with an opportunity to undertake inquiry based learning. UROP students can be used to assist you in any ongoing research projects currently underway. Your student assistant(s) may be involved in a variety of projects including, but not limited to: conducting library research, assisting in book and/or course development, laboratory/survey research, transcription, participating in community-based research, performance arts, and computer technology applications. Assignments can be as diverse as your research allows.

What are some advantages of working with a UROP student on my project?

As a faculty sponsor, you will have an opportunity to introduce students to their academic discipline and in so doing, open academic and career possibilities for students. Students will gain an in-depth understanding of the many roles that you undertake. UROP students bring enthusiasm and a fresh viewpoint to the project. Equally as important, student assistants can provide much needed assistance in expediting your research.

What are reasonable expectations of a UROP student?

With training, undergraduate student researchers can make significant contributions to the research project. Initially, less experienced researchers may need closer supervision. But over time, the student will be able to increase his/her level of participation and become a more independent worker. Faculty sponsors are encouraged to meet one-on-one with the student to review their progress.

How do I register my project for UROP?

You can add your project to UROP by simply filling out the Faculty Application Form. We will take your project and place it in our UROP project registry; located on Blackboard. Only UROP students can access this registry.

Who will select the students to work on my project?

Our studies indicated that faculty work better with students they personally select. However, the Office of Research can provide assistance in locating interested students in the event that you don't have an assistant in mind.

What if I experience a problem with my student?

Contact the Office of Research if you experience performance or communication issues with your student. Our staff will be happy to work with you to resolve the problem. If a resolution cannot be made, you have the option to remove a student from your project, using a Student Dismissal Form.

How is the student’s time recorded?

All students are required to submit bi-weekly timesheets. Timesheet due dates; which correspond with the University's schedule; will be listed on the form and will also be communicated as a reminder from the UROP staff. Faculty sponsors (or an approved signer) are responsible for endorsing the timesheets prior to submission to the Office of Research.
