UROP Student Profile - Corey Gaiser

Corey Gaiser
Major: Biology
Corey participated in a study which examined lipid peroxidation in Alaskan harbor seals.

How did you get involved in research?
I heard a great lecture in class about Dr. Trumble's work and I wanted to be apart of the project. I approached him expressing my interest, and he took me aboard.

How has participating in research impacted your education?
In more ways than I can count. This has been one of the most memorable experiences I've ever had. Learning in the classroom is one thing. But getting you hands into some real applied research is something else altogether.

What has been the most satisfying aspect of your research experience?
My project allowed me to travel to the Artic regions of Alaska. While there, I had the opportunity to meeting new and interesting people and see very cool sites. Though the weather was extremely cold at times and the days were short, I had a great time. I would have never thought in a million years I would have been working on a project like this.

What are your future plans? How has participating in research helped you in preparing for those future plans?

I want to eventually earn a Ph.D. in Biology. Participating in research has given me a taste of what I should expect as I advance in my studies. I feel like I'm ready for any challenges that await me.

What advice would you give to students interested in being involved in research?

Make a great impression on your professors. If you show enough interest and you are willing to do the work, professors will notice that and ask you to work with them. Put in your best effort and you'll be rewarded.
