Matthew is involved in a project
transcribing video-taped conversations between a
Japanese/English bilingual child and an adult.
How did you get involved in research?
My sponsor, who has taught several classes in which I was a student, suggested
the program to me because I seemed very interested in languages and Linguistics.
How has participating in research impacted your education?
I see it as an opportunity to accumulate some firsthand experience in the
practical part of Linguistics research.
What has been the most satisfying aspect of your research experience?
Learning in detail about the actual system used in Linguistics for the
transcribing of human language.
What are your future plans? How has participating in research helped you in
preparing for those future plans?
I've spent a lot of time studying Korean and Japanese since I started attending
college, and, after graduation, I plan to go teach ESL overseas -- first in
Korea and then possibly in Japan. However, I may eventually want to attend
graduate school to study Linguistics. Having participated in this program has
helped to prepare me by giving me some insight into how Linguistics research is
actually carried out on the practical level.
What advice would you give to students interested in being involved in
research?
View the program as a potential learning experience,
much as though it were a class you were attending, and try to learn as much as
you can.
