Ruirui was involved in a project examining gender, memory, and
appearance accuracy.
How did you get involved in research?
I got involved in research by approaching one of my professors in class and
asking him directly. I started working on his project at the beginning of the
term.
How has participating in research impacted your education?
Participating in research has helped me gain more knowledge about various
subjects, while I also learn another skill for the research I will need, e.g.
learning a new computer program.
What has been the most satisfying aspect of your research experience?
So far the interesting part for me is conducting the actual experiments and
doing the surveys. But I think I will be more interested in analyzing the data I
receive. Seeing the results of the research should be very rewarding.
What are your future plans? How has participating in research helped you in
preparing for those future plans?
My plan is going to on to graduate school and earn an MBA. Research experience
is good in many aspects and no matter in what field. Graduate schools or
employers would like to see the student has been actively involved in an
academic study. Most importantly, it's a nice experience for yourself. You will
know how research is conducted. :) It's fun for me.
What advice would you give to students interested
in being involved in research?
It's important to know that research is for anybody with a passion and the
motivation to do the work. Start by talking to different professors in your
classes. They are very knowledgeable about how to do research. See if they have
a project you can work on or if they know other professors who are looking for
students. You have to keep at it! Once you find a project, give it your absolute
best. Participate in UROP, present at conferences, and network with other
students. Research can be very enjoyable and rewarding if you put in the effort.
