Project #UR022

Project Number: UR022

Project Title: Constacyclic Codes and Optimal Distance over $Fqut$

Faculty Sponsor: Ricardo Alfaro

Department: Mathematics

Telephone: 810.762.3244

E-Mail: ralfaro@umflint.edu

Proposed Starting Date: 09/01/2009

Proposed Ending Date: OPEN

Student in mind: Yes

Number of hours to work per week: 1-6 hours

Project Description: Will produce several classes of examples of cpnstacyclic codes. Develop and use programs to compute distances and dimensions of images of codes. With enough results make conjecture about relation of type of matrices to the minimal distance of the image codes. Prove the conjectures.

Student Tasks & Responsibilities: Compute samples of codes, and analyze effect of different matrices on distances. Use and develop computer programs for this task. Then make conjectures and prove theorems about these codes. Get familiar with MAGMA, develop and use other programs for computing code images. Analyze data with respect to matrix properties and give arguments for their proposed properties.

Minimum Student Qualifications:  Senior standing, 3.5 min GPA, preferrably computer programming experience.
