Proposed Starting Date: 9/8/2009

Proposed Ending Date: 5/30/2010

Student in mind: Yes

Number of hours to work per week: 11-15 hours

Project Description: Bacteria will be isolated from aquatic vegetation and related sources. Purified isolates will be stocked back. Genomic DNA will be prepared from the bacterial isolates and used to identify the bacteria by PCR and nucleotide sequence comparisons.

Student Tasks & Responsibilities:  Patching of bacterial colonies to selective and differential media, use of quadrant streaking for single colony isolation and purification of isolates.Preparing of -80C freezer stocks of purified bacterial isolates. Preparation of genomic DNA. Preparation analysis, and purification of PCR reactions. Analysis of nucleotide sequence data.

Minimum Student Qualifications:  Introductory biology courses
