Project Description: The federal health care reform act specifies the use of "health navigators" yet their actual job duties seem vague. This study will explore the roles and activities of people who are already perceived as health navigators. Preliminary focus groups have been completed. Detailed interviews with 18-20 navigators will be conducted using student interviewers. Information gathered from these interviews will be analyzed for emergent themes related to the roles, activities, measures of success, and perceived barriers to health navigators in our area.

This is a joint project between the departments of social work and nursing. Denise Dedman and Richard Richardson will supervise the project. This is a part of a project that has IRB exempt status (see below).

Students will assist in reviewing the literature for existing descriptions of the roles of "health navigators." They will interview navigators in the Flint area and write detailed notes of each interview. They may participate in coding data from the interviews when completed. Excellent writing skills are required.
