UROP Faculty Guidelines

Project Criteria

  • The project and its assignments should be academically stimulating, as opposed to menial work.
  • The project’s research activities should be clearly described in the application.
  • The project should include opportunities for students to be given increasing levels of responsibility as the project progresses.
  • The project description should include a description of the preliminary and future responsibilities as the student gains experience.
  • The application should describe how the student will be involved and introduced to the scope of the project, e.g., conduct background reading(s), have regularly scheduled meetings with the faculty sponsor, etc.

Faculty Expectations

  • Sign bi-weekly timesheets (or designate an authority) to verify hours worked by the student.
  • Meet with the student assistant on a regular basis to discuss progress, concerns, training needs, etc.
  • Contact Andre Louis in the Office of Research if the student assigned is not showing up for work, not performing at an acceptable level, or having any difficulty with the student.
  • Provide our office with a project summary at the end of the student(s) work.
  • Encourage the student to construct an abstract, full research paper, oral and / or poster presentation, etc. at the Meeting of Minds conference or the Michigan Undergraduate Research Forum
