Project Description: This is a DEEP (dual enrollment) program that will create a community reporting (journalism) program for high school students, grades 10-12. It is an educational outreach and service program that will immerse students in both written and oral communication skills as well as technology and research skills. The goals are to create highly skilled high school students who are prepared for admissions into college and/or communications and technology jobs AND to create young people as stakeholders and problem solvers within their communities. UM-Flint student participants will serve as tutors and mentors and production/programming participants.
If successful, this will be an ongoing program of the Communications and Visual Arts Department.
We will have multiple ongoing components:
- School year news story production projects each semester.
- Summer media camp for K-12
- Summer youth film festival
Student Tasks & Responsibilities: Tutors - English language skills, written and oral communication skills, journalism, reporting and media production skills, technology skills. Mentors - English language skills, written and oral communication skills, journalism, reporting and media production skills, technology skills.
Minimum Student Qualifications: Majors in education, communications, computer sciences, English with excellent skills and references
