In 2012, the Lula M. Hurse Holiday Food Giveaway was established by the University of Michigan-Flint to provide Flint families with food for the Thanksgiving holiday. The vision is simple:  Give hope to all by giving to those who need help the most. This year the food giveaway will take place on Saturday, November 19th and we are gearing up for the logistics of processing four semi-trucks of food from the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan into food boxes for 400 families.  These four hundred families represent nearly 1,500 people served.  The inspiration for the event is Lula M. Hurse, whose son Jessie Hurse worked at UM-Flint for more than 10 years.   When his mother passed away in 2012, Jessie and the UM-Flint students he served, wanted to honor her memory.  When people thought of Lula Hurse, they thought about her southern roots and the wonderful aroma in her kitchen every holiday.  It was a warm welcoming place that smelled of freshly baked cakes and was full of friendly faces, good conversation, and love.

Since its inception the Lula M. Hurse Holiday Food Giveaway has provided over 200,000 lbs. of food to approximately 3,400 families.  Additionally, over 400 volunteers have gathered to fight hunger in their own community.  This year we expect our numbers to continue to grow and are now seeking volunteers for shifts on Friday evening and Saturday. Any student, faculty, staff, or community member can participate as a volunteer.

Thanksgiving is more than a meal, it is a time to reflect on all for which we are grateful.  Thank you for your consideration of our request to help in whatever way you can to make 400 Flint families happier and healthier this Thanksgiving.
