Department Advising Philosophy

Upon admission to UM-Flint, students expressing a desire to pursue a degree in social work are accepted into the major. Students are advised jointly by the Student Success Center and the Social Work Department Advisor within a two-tier model based on the accumulated number of credits. The advisor and student work together throughout the student's academic journey to meet program requirements and competencies.

The Social Work Program embraces a strength-based developmental approach, highlighting students' strengths and creating an overall proficiency to the academic, program, and professional culture. The Department supports a culture of inclusivity, a commitment to ongoing critical reflection that positively transforms our roles and relationships with diverse communities, and excellence informed by diverse voices addressing suffering and injustices so that all human beings are treated with dignity and respect.
