Description: Upon completing this course, students should have a full understanding of the American legislative process and the
patterns of health legislation, be able to analyze the issues and political process involved with the current health legislation and health legislative
proposals at the national and state levels, have in-depth understanding of the historical and current significance of persistent issues facing the American
health care system (e.g. universal health care coverage, access to health care, financing of Medicare and Medicaid) as well as those issues in particular to
the State of Michigan, and be able to think critically about current and future issues in health policy.

Description: This course and block of instruction is designed to present the principles and methods of strategic planning in the
health care environment, as well as give the student a practical application of strategic planning theory through readings, case studies, and individual
research. Current issues and examples will be used to cover topics including: strategic planning, change in management, leadership, visionary thinking,
governance, and financial implications of planning.

Description: This course will focus on contemporary health care issues that affect the management as well as the delivery of health
services. The current realities of the supply and demand of health care services will be assessed relative to demographics, socioeconomic status and disease
frequency. A broad-based approach will be used in understanding the working relationship of health care managers, their clinically-based employees, and the
independent physician base. The merger of technology and the health care environment will be evaluated conceptually, relative to the dynamics of computer
technology and the complexities of the health care environment.

Description: This course will serve to acquaint the student with both the financial dynamics of the rapidly changing health care
industry as well as the financial theory and practice of the operations of health care entities. The financial management of hospitals, physician offices,
health maintenance organizations and other health care entities will be considered.
Students who do not have experience/background in health care management are encouraged to take HCR 505 and HCR 525, as well as HCR 509 or HCR 577.
