Internship
The Business Internship Program is an essential link between the business and education communities. New ideas and technologies are communicated in a cooperative flow between the employing organization and the University of Michigan-Flint, extending beyond the internship setting. The integration of classroom training with practical experience is instrumental in achieving and maintaining the standards of excellence associated with the University of Michigan-Flint School of Management.
There are many reasons to participate in an internship as part of your educational experience in the School of Management including:
Internships are paid, full-time, and last for three to six months. The work periods are typically January-April, May-August, or September-December, but may also be tailored based on employer needs. Many internships become a commitment for two semesters. Students pay tuition and earn three credits for each of their internships. Students receive a grade of P (pass) or F (fail) for each internship.
Two semesters of successfully completed full-time paid internship experience is required to receive a Business Internship Certificate.

3. Meet with the SOM Internship coordinator (See contact information below) to discuss interests. Provide the coordinator with an electronic copy of your resume, and signed student contract.
Search process 4. Internship coordinator will provide leads for internship opportunities through your student email accounts. A list of open internship opportunities may also be found on this site. You are ultimately responsible for identifying and securing the internship. This site also provides a list of organizations our students had internships positions in the past to help you with the search process.
5. If an internship you have interest is identified, please provide the coordinator with a copy of your cover letter (Sample Cover Letter). The coordinator will forward your resume and cover letter to the organization with the internship opportunity.

6. If you are called for an interview, inform the coordinator of the details (date, time, place).
7. Prepare for the interview as if you are applying for a permanent job. Be sure to have your resume in order. Conduct a self-analysis in preparation for the interview. Determine whether you need to bring samples of your work, such as writing samples, marketing portfolio, with you. Conduct a background study of the organization. Dress conservatively. Be early for the interview.

9. After accepting an offer, do not continue to interview for other positions. Send a decline letter to other organizations (Sample Decline Letter).
10. Complete and submit the Internship Information Sheet to the coordinator.

-be admitted to the Bachelor of Business Administration Program
-be in good academic standing (GPA>2.50)
-be at least in junior standing
-register for BUS 394, and receive a pass grade based on compliance with internship guidelines.

12. Interns must work a total of at least 150 hours in a 15-week semester to earn 3 credits.
13. Keep a log of all hours worked, and a record of what was learned (Sample Internship Log).
14. Three weeks before the end of the internship, you must remind your supervisor at the organization to fax the completed performance appraisal and internship log to the internship coordinator (fax: 810-762 3282)

15. You should schedule a final consultation with the coordinator to discuss your evaluation of the internship.

17. It is courtesy to send a thank you letter to the organization you had internship along with a copy of the written report (Sample Thank You Letter).
