Core Course Innovation Management/Entrepreneurship
Professor Dale B. Tuttle
Fall 2009 to Spring 2010

Program Overview:
This program is concerned with developing your understanding of the qualities and requirements of both entrepreneurship and innovation. The focus is on providing you with ways of thinking about the formulation of innovations while providing you with the knowledge and tools to start a new business.
Because many of the participants have extensive business and life experiences, this course will examine individual knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics, and how they relate to the entrepreneurial process. Participants will have the opportunity to design, develop and analyze a new product/service idea, both independently and with the assistance of an entrepreneurial team.
Our primary task is to understand the management of entrepreneurial efforts. Our approach is to promote an experiential learning process that includes idea generation, practical operational guidance, feasibility study recommendations and conclusions, as well as the creation and analysis of a formal business plan. As part of this process, each program candidate will be required to think as an innovator, an entrepreneur, an investor, and a customer.
Conducting an effective feasibility study in an entrepreneurial setting is similar to creating an environmental scanning or early warning system to deal with competitive threats or public issues at any stage of their cycle of development and to use cost-effective methods to handle such matters. Typically, a proactive mindset and preemptive action are desirable rather than a reactive "damage control" mental model. The early elimination or "ruling out" of an innovation that possesses a fatal flaw is essential to the overarching objective of allocating resources most effectively. In other words, before investing time in writing a formal business plan, it is sensible to shape your service or product offering in ways that enhance the probability of its successful launch.
This program will be conducted largely as an experiential exercise in applied creativity, design, and feasibility analysis. Specifically, each class member will generate ideas for an innovative product or service. Throughout the course a number of questions will be raised concerning the feasibility of each student"s innovation. Results of each step of the feasibility analysis will be discussed in classroom sessions. Program Certificates will be awarded to participants based on their ability to successfully conduct a feasibility study and to create and present a formal business plan.
This program has six primary objectives:
(1) to improve your ability to identify issues and trends and to identify market opportunities.
(2) to introduce you to research and analysis techniques that will increase your competency in conducting new product or service feasibility studies.
(3) to improve your ability to create, design, and to generate innovative thought.
(4) to enhance your verbal skills, both written and oral with emphasis on organization, clarity, effective expression, generation of audience interest and response, and persuasiveness.
(5) to instill in you a sense of mastery of the current thinking in entrepreneurship
