The University of Michigan-Flint's MBA program has been ranked among the top 10 part-time MBA programs in the Midwest by BusinessWeek. The magazine's latest rankings released on November 5, 2009, also places UM-Flint 41st nationally among part-time MBA programs.
"The ranking of UM-Flint's MBA program provides external validation of our core business, which is quality business education," said School of Management Dean John Helmuth. "I appreciate the dedication and talent of our faculty, staff, and students in creating one of the premier MBA programs in the Midwest."
BusinessWeek uses a comprehensive methodology for its rankings. The magazine surveyed 4,222 students from 99 programs to measure student satisfaction and post-graduate outcomes. BusinessWeek also determines an academic quality score based on average GMAT score, average work experience, the percentage of all teachers in the part-time MBA program who are tenured faculty, average class size in core business classes, the number of business electives available to part-time MBA students, and the program's completion rate.
Students surveyed by BusinessWeek noted UM-Flint's excellent faculty, exceptional academic experiences, comprehensive programs, and high quality of students. UM-Flint earned an A+ ranking in "Caliber of Classmates" and an A in "Curriculum" in their student surveys.
Student responses from the survey include:
"Most professors had real-world experience and were knowledgeable in new business technologies, current business practices, and contemporary social issues."
"Professors had both real-world and academic experience. They were accomplished researchers and understood what would help us succeed in the workplace and in business in general. They challenged me, and the students did, too."
"Classes are small, and there is a lot of interaction between students and staff. I liked the intimate setting. Also, professors are excellent communicators and return e-mails and phone calls promptly."
"I was exposed to many different areas of the study of management. The program is well-rounded and comprehensive."
Recently, UM-Flint's School of Management also earned a spot among The Princeton Review's 301 Best Business Schools.

The School of Management at the University of Michigan-Flint is an outstanding business school, according to The Princeton Review. The education services company features the school in the new 2010 edition of its book, "The Best 301 Business Schools" (Random House / Princeton Review, on sale date Oct. 6, 2009, $22.99).
"We couldn't be more pleased with this recognition since it is really based upon what our students say about our programs," said School of Management Dean John Helmuth. "When your students describe your professors as 'very accomplished, published, and respected' and the MBA program is described as 'cutting-edge' and 'progressive' we take pride in keeping up this tradition of excellence."
"The Best 301 Business Schools: 2010 Edition" has two-page profiles of the schools with write-ups on their academics, student life and admissions, plus ratings for their academics, selectivity and career placement services. In the profile on UM-Flint, the Princeton Review editors describe the school as: "friendly, convenient and flexible;" and "A very progressive school, technology is well employed and remote course delivery is smooth." They quote from students attending UM-Flint who say UM-Flint's Traditional and Internet-based NetPlus! MBA programs offer a "great schedule to accommodate working people." Students reported the NetPlus! program to be "fast-paced" and cited its biggest advantage as attracting students from a wide geographic area. "Students are from top companies from across the nation. Some of the students come from as far as California on residency days." Students also praised the UM-Flint faculty noting, "The professors are all very responsive and knowledgeable."
In a "Survey Says . . . " sidebar in the profile, The Princeton Review lists topics that UM-Flint students it surveyed were in most agreement about. The list includes: "good peer network, cutting-edge classes with solid preparation in communication/interpersonal skills, presentation skills and quantitative skills." The Princeton Review's 80-question survey for the book asked students about themselves, their career plans, and their schools' academics, student body and campus life.
According to Robert Franek, Princeton Review Senior VP-Publishing, "We are pleased to recommend the University of Michigan-Flint to readers of our book and users of our site, www.PrincetonReview.com, as one of the best institutions they could attend to earn an MBA. We chose the 301 business schools in this book based on our opinion of their academic programs and offerings, as well as our review of institutional data we collect from the schools. We also strongly consider the candid opinions of students attending the schools who rate and report on their campus experiences at their schools on our survey for the book."

A newly signed articulation agreement could help further internationalize the University of Michigan-Flint campus. The School of Management (SOM) recently signed an agreement with the American College of Dubai (ACD) at the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to facilitate transfer of credits from ACD to UM-Flint. Under this agreement, students can complete up to 33 credits in ACD, and transfer to UM-Flint's Bachelor of Business Administration program to complete the rest of their business studies.
The American College of Dubai (ACD) is a privately endowed educational institution established under the laws of the UAE. At the post-secondary level, ACD has as its objective to provide university level credits to students and to assist them in transferring these credits to degree granting institutions in the USA, UAE, Canada, Europe, India and elsewhere. The College also offers Associate Degrees in the Liberal Arts, Business and Information Technology that are designed to assist students who desire an earlier start to their working careers. The Associate Degree in Business is designed for students seeking immediate employment in business and for those that are currently in the workforce seeking advancement or for transfer ultimately to a business bachelor degree program.
"I think this is a great opportunity for students in both institutions, as each will have a great deal of experiences to learn from each other and plant the seeds of future global partnerships," said Yener Kandogan, SOM associate dean. "Kathryn Schellenberg, a UM-Flint professor of sociology, who does research on UAE and travelled to that country many times, was instrumental in making the connection and realizing this partnership."

"Community One" is a new program that is offered in conjunction with a variety of classes to provide businesses with the information and research needed to make important decisions.
