In Fall 2016, Chancellor Susan E. Borrego convened a campus-wide committee to develop a five-year strategic plan for UM-Flint. After a year of campus-wide consultation, the campus adopted five high level strategic priorities. During the 2017-18 academic year, a second, smaller committee surveyed the campus as they considered how to best move the strategic plan forward. The result was six suggested initiatives that would support multiple priorities in the Strategic Plan.
During the summer of 2018, deans and members of the Chancellor’s cabinet reviewed the materials developed during both phases of the strategic planning process, along with the climate study results and other key metrics. Recognizing that this strategic planning cycle emerges after a period of enrollment challenges, exacerbated by the effects of the Flint Water Crisis, it was determined that the short-term stage (18-20 months) of the overall five-year strategic plan implementation needed to focus on three critical areas:
- stabilizing the budget;
- increasing enrollment (new students and retention);
- and increased faculty, staff, and student support.
Cabinet members and academic deans have begun looking at systematic ways to track the work being done in individual colleges, schools, and units. The intention for such tracking is to support unit differences but also aggregate the efforts and document progress towards the five high-level priorities. In the short term, tracking will be done on the three critical areas with a focus on the strategic priorities.
Fall 2018 will see the adoption of this tracking and reporting system.
