Relay for Life

What is Relay for Life

Relay for Life is about being a community that takes up the fight. Relay for Life is a life-changing event that gives everyone a chance to celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against the disease. At Relay for Life, teams camp out and take turns walking the track.  Because cancer never sleeps, Relays are overnight events up to 24 hours in length.  Relay for Life is the premier fund raiser for the American Cancer society.

Two out of five Americans will be diagnosed with cancer during their lives, and everyone will be touched by cancer at some point.  By being a part of Relay for Life, you are not only raising money to fund the mission of the American Cancer Society but you are also helping to raise awareness. Funds raised from Relay for Life support the American Cancer Society mission of saving lives by helping people stay well, helping people get well, by finding cures, and by fighting back.

History of Relay for Life on UM-Flint's Campus
The first annual University fo Michigan-Flint Relay for Life was held in the Spring of 2008 at the Rec Center with 16 teams composed of faculty and staff, student organizations, friends, and classmates.  Over $21,000 was raised in 2008.  Relay for Life has continued to take place every spring since, with a year to date fundraising total of $71,623. Since 2008, we have grown to 28 teams in 2011. The 2012 goal is 30 teams raising $25,000. With the largest committee in our 5-year history, the 30-member planning team is well on their way to hosting the best year ever for the University of Michigan-Flint's Relay for Life.
