HEAL THE COMMUNITY, SAVE THE DREAM!
"Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter." - Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Each year, the Office of Educational Opportunity Initiatives Diversity Education Services, along with the Office of Student Life, coordinate events to celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Our goal is to explore, as a campus community, the thoughts and concepts of our society and what shapes us as we negotiate the diverse world that surrounds us.
A campus that values difference and that supports diversity is a campus that encourages its members to explore the complexities that are central to intellectual life. Matters of race, ethnicity, and gender are not always easy to confront. But they must be confronted for issues concerning them are critical to this society and must be understood by those who would seek to lead it. A diverse campus enriches us all. The observance of Martin Luther King Day provides us with the opportunity to recognize and to celebrate that fact.
Remember, the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day is Service is "A day on, not a day off!"
Let us all "HEAL THE COMMUNITY, SAVE THE DREAM!"

Citizen King
Film and Discussion
12:00 - 2:30 PM
Loving Cultural Center, Room 243 University Center (UCEN)
The story begins on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in August 1963, when a 34 year old preacher galvanized millions with his dream for an America free of racism. It comes to a bloody end almost five years later, on a motel balcony in Memphis, Tennessee. Citizen King pushes past the myths that have obscured King's story to reclaim the history of a people's leader. Using the personal recollections, diaries, letters, and eyewitness accounts of friends, family, journalists, law enforcement officers and historians, this film brings fresh insights to king's difficult journey, his charismatic - if at time flawed - leadership, and his truly remarkable impact. Refreshments provided.
