How to Use Your VA Education Benefits at U of M-Flint


Your current situation will determine what steps you need to take to activate your benefits for the semester.  Please read through the three options below and follow the steps for your situation.

First time using your VA education benefits

1. You must apply to use your benefits through the VA.  You can submit the application (form 22-1990) by going to the VA’s website at www.gibill.va.gov.  Click on the Apply For Benefits link on the middle of the page.  The VA is taking approximately twelve weeks to process new applications.  If you do not know which education benefit is best for you, contact the Student Veterans Resource Center at (810) 424-5391 before submitting your application. 

2. You must submit the Veteran Intent Form at the following link: https://formassembly.umflint.edu/1538 .  This form must be submitted every semester you wish to use your VA education benefits.  The Certifying Official cannot certify your benefits until this form has been received each semester. 

Transfer Students

1. If you have used your VA education benefits before and are transferring to U of M-Flint, you must submit a Change of Place and Program form (form 22-1995) to the Certifying Official at U of M-Flint.  The Certifying Official has this form in the Student Veterans Resource Center and takes approximately five minutes to fill out.  Benefits for the first semester will be certified without this form on file, but no additional semesters will be certified until the form has been submitted.

Current Students at U of M-Flint
