University of Michigan-Flint

Kathi Horton • Community Foundation of Greater Flint

“I think it’s exciting that UM-Flint has had a succession of leaders who understand the role they can play as an urban university. The benefit is multidimensional. There is certainly a benefit for the community, having the infusion of talent and knowledge that University resources bring, but the University also benefits greatly by having real-time, real-place issues for faculty and students to apply knowledge and theory. Right now, we are working with them on the American Democracy Project, a fabulous fit for what we are both trying to do in terms of civic engagement. One of the primary goals of the Community Foundation is to ensure that our community has a collaborative infrastructure that promotes and supports civic engagement throughout the entire community. The University is an incredible resource for that collaborative structure.”
