Maria Victoria Smith - Nursing (MSN)

I'm a foreign nurse who has always desired to go beyond the reaches of my land and culture. I grew up with education as a goal, and excellence as a challenge. I have always been self-motivated, and it is my dream to achieve where excellence abounds in my chosen career. I have many family members who are in the medical profession - cousins and siblings serve as doctors, physical therapists and nurses. All of these people encouraged and inspired me; their success drives me to seek my own.

After earning my BSN, I worked two years at the Post Anesthesia Care Unit of the Philippine General Hospital. The many postoperative patients I handled and other related experiences there broadened my mind and piqued my interest in continuing my knowledge. My work in the Philippines was inspiring, but I wanted to take another big step in my chosen profession, and decided to work in the United States. I was surprised that I adjusted well to the culture, the environment, the people and my work. After over 10 years of rewarding clinical work at a convalescent home and Hurley Medical Center, I applied and was accepted to University of Michigan Flint for the MSN Nurse Practioner program.

I chose UM-Flint for the quality of its education and its closeness to home. I am currently in my second year and have found the experience one of my most rewarding yet. My drive, interest and enthusiasm will definitely be assets in my pursuit of this career.  I firmly believe that the knowledge and training UM has to offer is excellent and thorough.
