Michael McCarty • Political Science
In 1972, AC Sparkplug encouraged 21-year old worker Mike McCarty to utilize their tuition reimbursement program to get an education. Mike began at Mott Community College, transferred to the University of Michigan–Flint and began working on a degree in Political Science.
Thirty-five years later, Mike hopes that sharing his story of how earning his degree will show others with similar, manufacturing backgrounds that the personal and professional benefits of higher education are real and attainable.
“Because of the general education requirements at UM-Flint, I found myself in a statistics class, and I excelled at it. All those years later, I used that knowledge to become a Quality Liaison. I also drew from elements like business law, psychology, sociology and writing. I understood that by understanding people–their motivations–we could work together to greatly improve quality. It was all invaluable to me, and the companies I’ve worked for.”
