Patriece Campbell • International Student

My name is Patriece Campbell, and I am an international student from Jamaica. I earned my high school diploma at Knox College in Clarendon Jamaica at the age of sixteen, and later entered a Pre-Engineering Course at the University of Technology. I began my college career in the United States at the age of seventeen at Olivet College, then after a year, transferred to the University of Michigan- Flint.

I quickly became involved in numerous activities here. Volunteerism has become a very important part of my life since coming to UM-Flint. I have found that volunteerism is not as popular in other countries as it is in the U.S. The University of Michigan-Flint gave me the opportunity to volunteer in a variety of ways. When I graduated in 2004, I was given the True Blue Scholar award for having over 300 hours of volunteerism. Doing volunteer work helped me broaden my horizons by giving back to my community.

UM-Flint also aided in my growth as a leader. I served as the president of the International Student Organization for two and a half years. During that time, I spearheaded successful initiatives like the series of International Luncheons, the formation of a scholarship dedicated to International Students and the establishment of the International Student Center.

In December 2004, I graduated with a degree in Organizational Communication and a minor in International and Global Studies. In June 2005, I began the Masters of Public Administration program, and anticipate my graduation to be December 2006. I plan to earn a PhD in Higher Education Administration, concentrating in Student Affairs. I would some day like to hold an important office on a university campus where I can aid in the implementation of important policies and help the institution reach its objectives. I would also like to lecture in the field of higher education at the tertiary level.

There are many things that have motivated me to be the best that I can be. I believe that the most important factor, apart from my family, is the people I have gotten to know at UM-Flint. Many people here at the university have taken me under their wing at some time or another to mold me into the student leader they believed I could be. I strive for excellence, because I know it is expected of me, and is what I expect of myself. I am the person I am today because of all that I have been able to be a part of at the University of Michigan-Flint.
