Physical Therapy Patients (PT)
Physical Therapy services promote the mobility and functionality of patients with impairments and disabilities. These remediation techniques are provided by licensed Physical Therapists for a variety of acute and chronic pain conditions and for pre and post-op surgical needs. While visiting our practice, patients may encounter advanced standing students who are currently enrolled and earning their Doctorate of Nursing Practice and Doctor of Physical Therapy degrees. The UHWC provides these upper level students the opportunity to apply their clinical skills in an patient care environment that supports clinical and academic excellence. The Urban Health and Wellness Center provides outpatient healthcare services to UM-Flint students, faculty, our community, and members of the Genesee Health Plan. Please identify yourself in one of the groups below to determine your visit needs, costs, and time availibility. Also, please feel free to contact us for more information or for help with any questions you may have by calling: (810)-424-5269.

Physical Therapy - Physical therapy provides remedial and rehabilitative services which focus on increasing movement, improving physical function, and decreasing pain. Our orthopedic specialist is board-certified and uses evidence-based practices and protocols to ensure patients receive treatment that is nationally recognized as likely to produce desired outcomes. Tests and outcome measures are used to identify how well a person is functioning when they begin therapy. This guides goal setting and the treatment plan. Similar tests at various points throughout the therapy program guide the patient and the therapist as they make decisions about how long to proceed and when to transition the patient's treatments. Home instructions and step-down programs help patients maximize their improvements over time.
Back Pain - Over 80% of people in the United States will suffer from back pain at some time during their lives. Most back pain can be successfully treated with conservative (non-surgical) methods. These activities include (standing, walking, working) as tolerated, acetaminophen (non-aspirin over-the-counter pain reliever), and/or an anti-inflammatory medication, and cold packs to diminish swelling and pain. However, when back pain is chronic, persistent and disabling, a comprehensive physical therapy treatment approach addressing the problem offers the best hope for rehabilitation and a successful recovery.
Knee Pain - Knee symptoms develop from everyday wear and tear, overuse, or injury. Treatment for a knee problem or injury may include first aid measures, rest, bracing, physical therapy, medicine, and in some cases surgery. Treatment depends on the location, type, and severity of the injury as well as your age, health condition, and activity level (such as work, sports, or hobbies). Unfortunately, there is no quick cure for a knee injury. Physical therapy plays a key role in treating and rehabilitating the knee. The evaluation will look at muscle strength, flexibility, coordination, joint mobility and stabilization, and balance. A treatment plan is then developed depending on a person's individual condition.
Other Types of Pain - Our board-certified physical therapists are dedicated to helping people with chronic pain return to a normal, productive lifestyle. There are many effective treatments available that can eliminate or reduce chronic pain, and we use the most modern methods available. Using the latest in diagnostic technology, paired with medical therapeutics, our physical therapists will work with you to identify the source of your pain, eliminate or reduce the pain, and educate you on how to manage it.
