Publication Requirements
AFFIRMATIVE ACTION AND AMERICAN WITH DISABILITIES ACT STATEMENTS
The University, along with other organizations that receive federal funds, is required to print Affirmative Action and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) statements on certain materials. The regulations apply to “recruitment materials or publications containing general information that (the organization) makes available to participants, beneficiaries, applicants, or employees.” Affirmative Action and ADA statements must be included in those materials or publications. The U-M General Counsel requires that the following publications contain these statements:
· Bulletins
· Catalogs
· Academic program announcements
· Application forms
· Materials used to recruit employees
It is also recommended that publications given broad distribution, such as faculty and alumni news publications, carry these statements or an abbreviated version.
The Standard Practice Guide provision on non-discrimination (SPG 201.35) has been updated to include gender identity and gender expression. As you develop new print and web-based publications, please begin using the updated language below that includes an asterisk. You do not need to discard any current publications.
The updated language also is available on the Communicators Forum website (http://mc.umich.edu/forum/guidelines.html#gige) and on the website of the Office of Institutional Equity (http://www.umich.edu/~hraa/oie/ndpolicy.htm).
