Working with the Navigation File

Parent Pages, Navigation Titles and the Left-Hand Navigation

Every form entry has a "Navigation" section.  In this "Navigation" section are two properties: "Parent Page" and "Navigation Title".

Under the navigation section you must enter "Navigation Title"s.  These are the words that will be displayed in the navigation on the left.  For example, this page's Navigation Title is "Working with the Navigation File", so those are the words displayed in the left-hand navigation.

On each page you add to your TeamSite you must also enter a "parent page".  This parent page is the link the new page will be listed under in the left hand navigation.  For example, this page's parent page is "Instructional Documents" so it is listed under that link in the left hand navigation (see navigation on the left).  CMS Instructional Documents' parent page is the index page, or "CMS WEB GUIDE".

If you do not want a page to appear in the left hand navigation, make sure you check the box "Show only in Breadcrumb Trail".

Creating the Navigation File

When you first begin working in your new TeamSite it is important that you create the navigation file.  This navigation file will be responsible for controlling the links that appear on the left hand side of your TeamSite.  Follow the steps below to create your navigation file.  (**Please Note: You must create the index.htm file BEFORE creating the navigation file**)

  1. Click on "File" and then "New Form Entry".

  2. In the "Form Select" window, select "navigation" under "includes".  Click "Next".

  3. Click on the "+" sign to the right of "Main Page" (see image below).

  4. Use the "Browse" button to select your index.htm file.  Enter the text you would like to appear on the left for this link in the "Link Text" box.

  5. Click .  When the "Save Form As" screen appears, enter "navigation.dcr" for the "File Name".  Make sure you include the ".dcr" after navigation.

  6. When the "Save Output File As" window appears, navigate to the "includes" folder for your TeamSite.  Enter "navigation.inc" for the "File Name" and press OK to complete the generation of the navigation file.

  7. Press "Finish" on the nagivation form entry to close the window.

Regenerating the Navigation File

Once the navigation file has been created, you will need to regenerate it any time you wish to update it with new pages you have added to your TeamSite.

  1. Using the file list, navigate to the "includes" folder, and select the "navigation.inc" file by checking the box to the left of the file.
  2. Click on "Actions" and "Regenerate".

The navigation on each page in your TeamSite should now be up to date.

Please note:  Any time you regenerate the navigation file it may lose any manually included adjustments.

Manually Editing the Navigation File

When you regenerate the navigation file, the CMS may not put the links in the order you desire.  You may manually alter the navigation file to place links in the appropriate order by following the steps below:

  1. Using the file list, navigate to the "includes" folder, and select the "navigation.inc" file by checking the box to the left of the file.
  2. Click on "Edit" and then "Edit" from the menu list.
  3. The navigation form entry window will appear.  Use the "+" signs on the left to expand the nested elements.  Use the arrows on the right () to move the links up and down until they are in the desired order.  You may also manually add links to be displayed by using the "+" sign to the left of the up arrow, or delete links by clicking on the "x" to the right of the down arrow.
  4. Click "Finish" and answer "Yes" when asked if you would like to regenerate the file.
