Women's and Gender Studies Program

WGS is an interdisciplinary program at the University of Michigan-Flint.

WGS has two main aims:

  1. to analyze the historical and contemporary experience of women in different parts of the world
  2. to examine how women's and men's lives and identities have been structured culturally, economically, politically, and socially

WGS sheds new light on the constructions of masculinities as well as recognize differences among women and men on the basis of class, race, ethnicity, and sexual orientation.

What can be done with WGS?

  • Knowledge of the subject enables students act more thoughtfully and vigorously in their public and personal lives.
  • The insights and experiences that students bring to WGS courses constitute an important contribution to a still developing body of knowledge.
  • WGS provides a strong foundation for students wishing to undertake work in such areas as education, teaching, medicine, health services, law, politics, social work, social services, personnel and affirmative action, union and community organization, and written and performed art.
  • The minor helps prepare students for graduate school in the humanities and social sciences.
