Who is the Writing Center for?
The WC is for you, whatever your class, major, standing, or writing experience. All writers, such as undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, and staff use the Writing Center.
What services does the Writing Center provide?
You can come in for assistance for papers of any subject at any stage of writing: getting started, fine tuning topics, developing ideas or revising, finishing papers, and working on MLA & APA formats. What do you want to work on?
Do I need an appointment?
It’s best to make an appointment. That way you know a tutor will be waiting for you when you are ready to work on your paper. You are also welcome to simply drop in and see if a tutor is available. You can make an appointment online, call 766-6602, or stop by to set one up. Be sure to set up an appointment well in advance of the assignment’s final due date. This will give you enough time to make any changes to your paper.
What should I bring to a session?
Bring the assignment sheet for your paper, a copy of what you have so far, notes for your topic or ideas you want to develop. A typed hard copy is suggested, if possible, to facilitate reading by the tutor, and something to write with. Also, it can be helpful to bring previous drafts or notes and mention any particular questions or concerns you may have.
What will happen in a tutoring session?
You will collaborate with a tutor on ideas, organization, style, and anything you feel you need or want to work on regarding your writing process for the assignment at hand. You will get to discuss your ideas and goals for the paper and develop strategies for achieving those goals. If you have a draft of your essay, the tutor can read it aloud so you can hear what it sounds like.
Can I get help with grammar?
Yes, you can get assistance with identifying grammar issues and learn strategies for avoiding them in the future.
How often can I visit the Writing Center?
You can visit as often as you like, and we encourage you to come back after you’ve made revisions to a draft.
