Description of Course The growth of the Internet, the globalization of trade, and the rise of information economies have recast the role of information systems in business and management. Internet technologies are supplying the foundation for new business models, new business processes, and new ways of creating and distributing products, services, and knowledge. To survive and succeed in today's complex business world, all companies - from established industry leaders to feisty upstarts - must develop a strategy that allows them to take maximum advantage of the latest trends in information technology. This course presents new research and application trend in one or two particular information areas. In this semester, we focus on e-commerce in business domain. This course will emphasize the three major driving forces behind e-commerce to provide a coherent conceptual framework for understanding the field: technology change, business development, and social issues.
 
Objectives of Course The major objectives of this course include: Teaching Methods Course material, class lecture, assignments, and projects will revolve around the primary concepts of e-commerce. Working part of the course will provide an opportunity for you to gain a greater understanding of topics. The class activity consists of two components: lecture (7:00 - 8:30) and group meeting (8:45 - 9:45). The lecture focuses on the issues around the assigned readings. In the group meeting part, the students use the class time to have face-to-face meeting with other members for the group project. This class strongly encourage the students to raise questions around the topic in class. It is essential that you allocate adequate time to read assigned chapters and prepare the questions.

This course allocates one lecture time for free-topic discussion. The purpose of the class discussion is to help you understand broader issues related to your career, economy, and society. We will discuss any topic in the class, such as globalization, current economy, labor market, new technology, education, etc,. You are expected to prepare the discussion topic and collect information around the topic. You can earn up to 50 points for the discussion. The actual points are given based on the quality of the discussion and student participation.   

Team-work and active learning are encouraged in this course.  Project-based learning is adopted in this course to promote active learning and connect concepts to applications. The team projects give you an opportunity to understand the concepts related to the project and solve the real-world problems. You will not be given all the information you need for the project, but are responsible for finding and using appropriate sources.
