INFORMATION REGARDING THE INCIDENT AT THE
WILLIAM S. WHITE BUILDING ON MONDAY, OCTOBER 4, 2021

At approximately 9:38 a.m. on Monday, October 4, a person notified the UM-Flint Department of Public Safety (DPS) that they thought they heard gunshots near the William S. White Building. An emergency alert was immediately sent to the campus, instructing everyone to shelter in place as DPS and several other police agencies arrived on the scene. Law enforcement personnel  thoroughly searched the surrounding area. Upon investigation of the incident, it was determined that no shots were fired and there was never a threat to the UM-Flint campus. An all clear message was issued at 9:50 a.m.

All regularly scheduled campus classes and activities are taking place. DPS continues to have a presence at the William S. White building to greet faculty, staff, and students as they arrive and to answer any questions or concerns they may have.

For anyone who needs to reach out and speak to someone after today’s incident, there are resources available to you. For students, you can contact Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), as well as the Office of the Dean of Students. Faculty and staff are eligible to use the confidential services available through the Faculty and Staff Counseling and Consultation Office (FASCCO). Please contact their office at (734) 936-8660. They will provide you with an authorization¬†number and a list of counselors near you (residence or work) for you to schedule a session. If you have questions about the process you can call FASCCO or contact University Human Resources.
