The UM-Flint Career Center Internship Program
The UM-Flint Career Center is proud to offer an Internship Program. This program is designed to help students search for and identify internship opportunities. Students will work directly with a Career Advisor, who will help them prepare for an interview, search and apply for summer internships.
What is an Internship?
The National Association of Colleges and Employers defines an “internship” as: a form of experiential learning that integrates knowledge and theory learned in the classroom with practical application and skills development in a professional setting. Internships give students the opportunity to gain valuable applied experience and make connections in professional fields they are considering for career paths; and give employers the opportunity to guide and evaluate talent (NACE, 2011).
What are the benefits of an Internship?
  • Gain real-world experience and a skillset that employers value
  • Learn about your career interests and passions in a professional setting
  • Gain better understanding of a specific company or industry and the possibility of a long-term career opportunity
  • Build your professional network
  • Boost your resume
  • Depending on your major, earn academic credit for your internship
  • Potential to have a full time job offer after the internship experience and/or graduation.  Approximately 73% of 2016 college graduates who took part in paid internships received at least one job offer (NACE, 2016).
  • Put theory into practice by applying your classroom knowledge in a practical setting
